Casas del XVI is a collection of restored colonial residences tucked away amongst the 16th Century streets of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Within this historical setting, Prohotel created a luxury boutique experience around these city centre houses, which feature swimming pools, libraries, outdoor dining areas as well as a private butler in each house.

Challenge  

Solara Real Estate own a number of historical houses in the UNESCO site, Colonial City in Santo Domingo. Prohotel was commissioned to develop a hotel concept that preserved their history whilst providing an intimate exclusive experience for discerning guests. We were tasked with identifying a delicate balance between home and hotel, whilst providing a luxury experience.

Strategy 

We upheld a strong design-­focus using careful restoration techniques together with contemporary edge styling. Each colonial house was given an individual story retaining its signature character so guests could immerse themselves in the city’s profound history. Special features such as tropical plant-lined swimming pools, libraries, honesty bars and local art were homely additions while private butlers ensured state-­of­-the­-art personalized service.

Result

As a result of the raised demand and exposure, Casas del XVI made Condé Nast Traveler’s Hot List in 2015 and has received a 9/10 online rating from The Telegraph newspaper in the UK as well as being a favorite amongst tour operators. It remains one of the most sought after accommodations within Santo Domingo and is now a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. As a result of its success, Prohotel will be adding a further 21 houses to Casas del XVI in the Colonial City.
