The humpback whales’ melodious mating songs are just around the corner and Sublime Samana Hotel is prepared to host multi-generational families traveling together for a memorable experience.
“Family is the core of the Dominican culture and grandparents are at the top of the family hierarchy. We want all family members, old and young, and those in-between to come together and enjoy the soothing whale-watching experience,” explains Aida Cabrera, general manager at Sublime Samana.
Families can take advantage of the Whale Watching Experience package offered by Sublime Samana, which includes accommodation for 4 nights, one whale-watching tour per person, daily breakfast, and round trip airport transfers from Santo Domingo (SDQ) or Samana (AZS).
On their whale watching tour, families will learn interesting facts, including the gestation period of each female humpback whale. Humpback whales travel the oceans for most of the year, but always return to the same spot in the Samaná Bay to find a mate or bare their offspring. To find one another, the whales emit a series of songs that travel long distances penetrating the oceans. Like human personalities, whales have unique characteristics that make them different from one another identified by their distinctive arrangement of pigment and scars, and of course their songs.
When coming face to face with these mysterious mammals, children will be the most astounded spectators of the multi-generational whale-watching group. From the point of view of a child, a humpback whale will be like discovering a new animal species. Upon witnessing these coveted sea animals, children will be left in awe and parents and grandparents will experiencing a new kind of unexplainable joy – one that will live in the minds of each family member for years to come.
In the same way the sounds of the whales travel across the permeable layers of water, Sublime Samana wants this unique experience to be available for everyone, including hearing-impaired children. Last year, the hotel had the pleasure of collaborating with the Maria Battle Foundation, which provides an advanced technological backpack tool to hearing-impaired children. Many of these children had never experienced music, but with the assistance of high-tech backpacks the children were able to experience the whale songs through vibrations. This year, Sublime Samana will once again collaborate with the foundation and is expecting to welcome David Rothenberg, a world-renowned philosopher, naturalist and musician. Rothenberg will be playing his music alongside the whales to enhance the whale-watching experience.
